What is Gliese?
Gliese, named after the Gliese 581 star system, is the working title of my current project. It is planned to become a space colonisation game with elements from “Outpost 2″ (from Dynamix/Sierra Entertainment).
What will be the main idea of Gliese
You will command some astronauts just after arriving on an alien planet. Their task is to prepare the big scale colonization of this planet, but something went wrong during their yearlong journey and they will have to struggle against nature and other forces, to survive and to reestablish contatct to earth.
The gameplay will consist of exploring the planet, gathering resources, extending the base and to protect against a wide range of dangers. Every astronaut will have abilities, that makes him/her essential for fulfilling the mission, so some astronaut could have special knowledge in mechanics and therefore be able to construct simple mechanisms/vehicles while others may be experienced in botanics, that will help to improve farming or to raise special crops.
When will it be available?
As I am still into making the engine and finding useful ideas for the gameplay there is no date set when Gliese will be released. From time to time eventually I will release techdemos to show my current progress and (hopefully) to get this project to a broader audience.
Who is working on Gliese?
I’m the only person behind this project and even that I am a programmer myself, the construction of an 2D-engine that fulfills my wishes will cost some time. As I am a student and my main target is to reach my masters degree I will develop this project mainly during my free time.
What will you use?
The whole project is planned to be programmed in Java using the LWJGL libraries, so compatibility with Windows and Linux should hopefully not be that much of a problem.
